September is Eat Local Month in Washington, and while we often think about eating local when it comes to shopping at farmers' markets or dining at locally-owned restaurants, we want to recognize those working to make fresh, local food accessible to everyone in our community.

The Thurston County Food Bank is one of those organizations that is a driving force behind eating local for everyone. For the past two years, we've worked with the Thurston County Food Bank to deliver our grass-fed, grass-finished beef to their warehouse for distribution to their multiple pickup locations.

We believe that everyone should have access to high-quality, nutritious meat, but we know it’s not always easy. Food is not just fuel. It’s family and connection to our culture. And for many of us who grow, raise, harvest, prepare, and cook food - it’s a labor of love. Through our partnership with the Food Bank, we get to contribute in a small way to an essential part of people’s daily lives through food, and help make our little corner of the world just a little better. We're grateful for our partnership with the food bank, because they help make all of that possible.

If you have a backyard garden and some extra produce this fall, you can donate your home-grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs to the food bank. Donating is easy - just make sure items are clean, and bring them to the Lacey or Olympia food pantries. For more details, see their Grower's Guide for what they need more of and how to deliver.

Women's Resources For Getting Started In The Beef Industry

It's never too late for a second career. I started my career in marketing and technology, and it took 20 years for me to turn to a full-time job as a rancher. If you're thinking about getting involved in the beef industry - whether you're dreaming about running your own ranch or thinking about different types of roles like sales, marketing, and distribution - here are a few resources to get you started.

National Beef Advocates

This year the National Beef Ambassadors are highlighting 50 producers from 50 states to show the diversity of women in the cattle industry. As a fifth-generation rancher, I was honored to be chosen to represent Washington State.

The Heart of the Sound

On this season of Washington Grown, episode 8 features highlights from Thurston County, including stops on the Thurston Bountiful Byway and the history of agriculture in our region.
