My first real job at 16 was working at the Tenino Antique Mall where Sandstone Cafe is located today. And for better or worse (and it would definitely be for worse if you ask my bank account) that started a life-long interest in retail. When I was in college, I loved working at Greg's Greenlake Cycles in Seattle because it allowed me to be immersed in a community of people who were passionate about biking. After I graduated, I joined the online team at REI to share information about the outdoors and adventure travel, and in the process, create an online community of people who loved the same things.

When I took over my family's business at the ranch two years ago, I believed one of the best ways to grow our business would be in the real world where we could connect in person with the people who care about where their food comes from. Creating a physical retail store would allow us to do just that. But I wanted it to be bigger than the ranch itself. Southwest Washington is home to so many great farmers, ranchers, food producers, and chefs creating amazing food all right here in our community, and I wanted to showcase the bounty of local food our region has to offer. And that's how Colvin Ranch Provisions was created. To hear more of the story, check out this YouTube clip

Women's Resources For Getting Started In The Beef Industry

It's never too late for a second career. I started my career in marketing and technology, and it took 20 years for me to turn to a full-time job as a rancher. If you're thinking about getting involved in the beef industry - whether you're dreaming about running your own ranch or thinking about different types of roles like sales, marketing, and distribution - here are a few resources to get you started.

National Beef Advocates

This year the National Beef Ambassadors are highlighting 50 producers from 50 states to show the diversity of women in the cattle industry. As a fifth-generation rancher, I was honored to be chosen to represent Washington State.

The Heart of the Sound

On this season of Washington Grown, episode 8 features highlights from Thurston County, including stops on the Thurston Bountiful Byway and the history of agriculture in our region.
