This year the National Beef Ambassadors are highlighting 50 producers from 50 states to show the diversity of women in the cattle industry. As a fifth-generation rancher, I was honored to be chosen to represent Washington State. I'm proud of our legacy as the oldest cattle ranch in the state still operated by the original founding family.
Our heritage of humane livestock handling, sustainable grazing practices, and stewardship of the land for more than 175 years has ensured that native plants and endangered animals thrive alongside our cattle. Today, Colvin Ranch is home to some of the last remaining native prairies in Southwest Washington, and is protected by an NRCS conservation easement to ensure it will remain prairie forever.
Outside of the ranch, I spend a lot of time promoting local agriculture and advocating for both conservation and the long-term viability of family farms. All of my volunteer work is based on our ranch's mission: to take care of the land, animals, and people in the community. Some of my favorite organizations to work with are the Thurston Conservation District (where I serve as a Board Supervisor), the Thurston County Agriculture Advisory Committee (where I serve as the Committee Chair), the Thurston Agritourism Advisory Committee, Washington CattleWomen, and 4-H.
At the heart of my work on and off the ranch is a belief that everyone should have access to high-quality and nutritious food, because food is not just fuel. It’s family and a connection to our culture. For me, it’s a labor of love.
